Amongst a chain of corporates and brands, the 2nd generation family run restaurant is surviving the change on the Strand that is opening way to large investments and office blocs.“The stranger will probably be disappointed at his first visit to the Strand,” wrote Charles Dickens in his 1879 Dictionary of London. “And in truth the houses which line it are for the most part unworthy of its position as a portion of the greatest thoroughfare in London.”
Today, while most of the shops, restaurants and great houses that once lined the Strand may have gone, many might still agree with Dickens’ sentiment. The “noble thoroughfare” he hoped the Strand would become, has instead been subsumed by a welter of Pret-a-Mangers and other chain stores.
Salieri, the last family-run restaurant, could soon be forced to move. The owner says the landlord, Aviva Investors, has put the building up for sale. The restaurant, which opened in 1976, has dodged eviction once this year but questions remain over how long it can remain at number 376, The Strand.

It is poignant that Salieri was specifically chosen as the 100th SME profiled on Small Business Saturday. The team at Salieri hosted a reception for all 100 SMES from around the country specially profiled for the national campaign after a visit to HM Treasury’s hosted Christmas Fair on Friday 4th December. Attending the reception was local opera artist Leanne, Westminster’s Horticultural Garden Society , the Ambassador for TRNC, the Conservative Councillor for Westminster ward Tim Mitchell.

I see a real recovery now in the economy after a few hard years, especially with the refurbishment works around here.

We welcome all Government support to keep us running and encourage them to ensure small businesses are not driven out especially from London where small business owners add diversity and heart to a community”.

Salieri’s owner, the oldest and only family-run restaurant left on The Strand celebrates four decades on London’s most iconic theatre street.
His Royal Highness The Earl of Wessex as Patron of The London Gardens Society became the latest dignitary to visit Salieri where he met Sammy andhis family in recognition of Sammy’s horticultural contribution to the Strand and for his support over many years for The London Gardens Society.
Located opposite the The Savoy Hotel, Salieri holds memories from the Golden Era of theatre and film to today as stars wined and dined in a relaxed environment and amongst Londoners and local business clientele.
Owner Sammy of Salieri said, “It’s not always been an easy task over 35 years but I know that hard work does and will pay off. Even now, at the age of 71 I wake up at 3am and I shop for the restaurant from the great markets of Smithfield and Covent Garden.
HM Lord Lieutenant of Greater London Ken Olisa Esq OBE said “It is great to see independent family businesses such as Salieri thrive in Westminster for nearly 4 decades I thank them for their business efforts and supporting the London Garden Society”.
Sammy added “I see a real recovery now in the economic climate and my wish is that small independent owners are supported so they can make their family businesses a success. The Earl’s visit is wonderful honour. I thank the Garden Society and all my local neighbours for their support. I hope we never lose the community we have developed here over the past 4 decades.”

Salieri’s owner, the oldest and only family-run restaurant left on The Strand celebrates four decades on London’s most iconic theatre street, and on only four hours night sleep and becomes the latest to be selected for the Top 100 Small Business Saturday in the UK.
